Can a sculpture help balance the vibrational reality between nature and the man-made structures in our cities?
Nature emits A sacred harmonious vibration. The meeting or the coming together of earth and vegetation to the sky, sun, and clouds, is in total balance. When you cover the earth with cement, asphalt, and hard square or rectangular buildings without a true relation with the surrounding nature, a disharmony or discord is created which affects our well-being albeit unconsciously.Art can do much in reestablishing the harmony and balance that is essential to our well-being.
Art can be A testimonial to our growth as human beings as long as we are truthful and do not become overly attached to the art form itself and forget this transformational journey that we are taking through this mysterious life.
We Live in A time of complete freedom in the Visual arts as far as what is accepted and exhibited but true creative freedom is a difficult treasure to obtain. The freedom to express what is in the heart and soul with the mastery of language, technique, and craft, to give it form.
Q. With so many different directions and trends in the visual arts how did you find your way?
A. I learned a great deal by going to the museums and studying the artists that I was drawn to, but ultimately I believe that we must become our own authority and rely only on our own inner knowledge, then we find certainty.
Q. What do you think makes A good or a complete artist?
A. One who has mastered the three main aspects of art, vision, language, and craft. All of the arts contain those aspects. Vision is where we find our inspiration, our ideas. Language is the form that we give to these ideas and craft is important for a work to be well done and to endure the test of time.
How do we find our own vision?
Everyone finds it in their own unique way, for me, traveling to places like Peru opened me up to myself. Also the persistence to keep knocking on the door and asking . In some cultures like Japan, they have developed systems and techniques to find a person's vision through various forms of meditation. In the West we are left pretty much on our own to find it anyway that we can.
What about language?
In the visual arts language has expanded so much in the past century that there is a lot to choose from. I choose a language that best expresses my vision and that is real to me. What interests me most is Multi dimensional art and I have combined the figure with geometric shapes to express the familiar lyrical quality of the human figure with the geometry that is from other dimensions.
How important is craft
In sculpture the craft is very demanding if you intend for it to last. I prefer organic materials so I use clay, Ground stone, plaster, wax, copper, and bronze. Making large sculptures can be very labor intensive.
Question: how does the artist. Fit into society?
Answer:He doesn't, an artist, or anyone with vision, must remain free and not conform to any group thinking, only then can they give something of true value back to society. Society has created A way of thinking about the world in a very materialistic structured way, this is a way to hide from the infinite, unexplainable mystery, both in ourselves and in this universe. It is into this unknown reality that the artist ventures into, gives form to, and reflects in his art.
